Committee on Int'l trade in endangered species meets in Hanoi


Ha Noi, July 30 (VNA) -- The 17th conference of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Committee opened in Ha Noi on July 30 with the participation of 135 delegates from 42 countries in the world.

8,1 million tourists in 7 months



Ha Noi, Aug. 1 (VNA) -- Viet Nam welcomed almost 8.1 million tourists, including 1.4 million foreigners, in the first seventh months of this year.

As a result, the country's revenues from tourism reached VND 6,400 billion (USD 441 million) in the reviewed period, or a 14 percent year-on-year increase, according to the Viet Nam Tourism Administration (VTA).

To lure more tourists, the VTA has proposed Vietnamese embassies in foreign countries to simplify administrative procedures in granting visas to foreigners.

Gov't promulgates measures to boost exports

Ha Noi, July 30 (VNA) -- The Government on July 26 promulgated decision 908/QD-TTg outlining measures to promote exports in the remaining months of the year.

Under the decision effective as of the signing date, export goods will be exempted from customs duties and all other fees related to export formalities within one year. The Finance Ministry will coordinate with provincial authorities to reduce fees for those engaged in trading in border areas.

IT competition for young people


Ha Noi, July 30 (VNA) -- The seventh national non-professional information technology (IT) competition for young people closed in Ha Noi today, July 30, with Tran Dinh Phuong Ngon winning the special prize.

Ngon, a fourth grader from Ho Chi Minh City recorded the maximum mark of 100/100.

Nine students won first prizes while 93 others received second, third, and consolation prizes.

Party Chief calls for implementation of congress resolution

Foreign funded projects for social development


Ha Noi, July 31 (VNA) --The Prime Minister approved a number of foreign-funded projects on HIV/AIDS prevention and social development.

The PM assigned the Ministry of Public Health to receive and implement a Luxembourg-funded project on the prevention of HIV/AIDS in Viet Nam. The project will be carried out on a trial bais in northern provinces of Hai Duong and Ha Tay and southern provinces of Dong Nai and Kien Giang in 2001 and 2002.

Government discussed plan of action

Birds parks in Mekong delta


Ha Noi, July 28 (VNA) -- Tourists who come to Viet Nam's Mekong delta will be surprised by its rich wild life, particularly by various birds that flock to the region.

According to statistics, there are around 30 bird sanctuariesa in Mekong delta provinces of Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Dong Thap, Can Tho, An Giang, Ca Mau and Kien Giang. Some of them formed in time immemorial and cover hundreds of hectares like those in U Minh Thuong of Kien Giang's Vinh Thuan district and Ca Mau's Ngoc Hien district.

52,700 non-state establishments operate nationwide


Ha Noi, July 28 (VNA) -- As many as 52,700 non-State establishments have been operating in Viet Nam under the implementation of socialization of education, healthcare, culture, and sports, according to a survey released by the Finance Ministry.

Mekong-Ganga cooperation accords adopted


Ha Noi, July 28 (VNA) -- The Ha Noi Programme of Action for Mekong-Ganga Cooperation and the Agreements on Tourism, Cultural, Human Resource Development and Transportation Cooperation between six countries in the Mekong and Ganga basins were passed in Ha Noi on July 28.

The documents were adopted during the Second Ministerial Meeting on Mekong-Ganga Cooperation, MGC, by Cambodia, India, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam.
