There are some 250,000-300,000 children in the world currently affected by armed conflicts. The issue was first put forth in the 1990s and the UN Secretary General appointed an ambassador on the issue.

Vietnam Wins UN Security Council Seat

Vietnam, along with Libya and Burkina Faso, was elected to a nonpermanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for 2008-09 on Tuesday. leluongminh.bmp

The three countries were unopposed and obtained the required two-thirds majority of votes in favor from the 192-member UN General Assembly.

UN Chief Arrives in Vietnam for First Visit

To the surprise of many locals, the UN chief and his wife Nane Annan came by economy class aboard a commercial flight from Beijing following a visit to China.

Vietnam Attends Pacific Army Chiefs Conference

A Vietnamese military delegation is attending the fourth Pacific Army Chiefs Conference (PACC IV) held in Bangkok, Thailand, from August 1-4.

During the conference themed "Impacts of Transformation on the Asia-Pacific Security Environment", participants have taken part in bilateral and multilateral discussions.

They have also exchanged views on the scope of transformation as well as its impacts on security of the Asia-Pacific region.

Government Officials Pay Visit to Holy See

ROME — Viet Nam and the Vatican have agreed to increase contacts to promote mutual understanding, solve issues of mutual concern, and improve bilateral relations.

The agreement was reached during a visit to the Vatican from June 27 to July 3 by a delegation of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs, led by Chairman Ngo Yen Thi. The visit was made at the invitation of the Holy See’s Relations with States.
