More than 20,000 businesses after Enterprise Law


Ha Noi, August 19 (VNA)-- More than 20,000 businesses have been set up across the country since the Enterprise Law came into effect on Jan.1, 2000.

The new businesses' registered capital totals more than VND 24,000 billion (roughly USD 1,655 million). In addition, thousands of pre-Enterprise Law entities have received permits for additional industries or services.

Vietnam to exploit 30 million tones of oil & gas per year 2010


Ha Noi, Aug. 18 (VNA) -- With a new oil discovery at the Su Tu Den (Black Lion) oil and gas field on the southeastern continental shelf, Viet Nam expects to exploit 28-30 million tonnes of oil and gas per year by 2010.

According to initial estimate by the Viet Nam Oil and Gas Corporation (PetroVietnam) and its partners, the reserve of the new oil field at lot 15-1, belonging to Cuu Long sedimentary area offshore Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, is about 420 million barrels.

Call for comprehensive reform for education in 2001-02



Ha Noi, Aug. 18 (VNA) -- The Ministry of Education and Training has called for comprehensive education reform so as to speed up primary education universalisation in poor communities, increase the trend towards technical colleges, reduce costs of university entry examinations, and effectively fight against false diplomas and certificates.

Seminar on environment and sustainable development in Vietnam


Ha Noi, Aug. 18 (VNA) -- Some 400,000 nomadic families who use forests for farming and housing and 300,000 poor rural families have put pressure on Viet Nam's policy makers to find an appropriate solution for their sustainable development.

Ordinances on Lawyers, plant protection and quarantine


Ha Noi, August 17 (VNA) -- Viet Nam's Ordinances on Lawyers, and Plant Protection and Quarantine (revised) were introduced at a press briefing held on August 17, by the State President's Office.

These ordinances were approved by the National Assembly Standing Committee of the 10th Legislature on July 25, 2001.

The Ordinance on Plant Protection and Quarantine will serve as a legal basis to strengthen state management in the area, targetting a sustainable agricultural production, good environment, and an ecological balance.

Party leadership should be renovated- Gen. Secretary said


Ha Noi, Aug. 13 (VNA) -- General Secretary Nong Duc Manh says new working regulations for top Party officies should aim at renewing leadership methods and streamline their functioning.

The responsibilities of the Politburo, the National Assembly and the Government should also be clearly identified, he said at the opening of the third plenum of the Party Central Committee in Ha Noi on Aug. 13.

Mr.Manh called on all members of the CPVCC to change working style and adopt regulations governing the work regime of the new committee.

Garments and textiles search for export outlets


Ha Noi, Aug. 7 (VNA) -- Measures to expand markets and increase exports in the context of global competition were discussed recently by 50 leading garment and textile enterprises with the Trade, Planning Investment, and Finance Ministries.

At a workshop held in Ho Chi Minh City on Aug. 6, the participants stressed the importance of the Government's support for their efforts in rationalising production and increasing productivity.
