Viet Nam leading developing world in poverty reduction


Ha Noi, Oct. 25 (VNA) -- In Semptember 2000, President Tran Luong pledged the nation to reach the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. Each of these goals relates to the work of the UN System in Viet Nam - whether to ensure that every child goes to school or whether to develop a policy framework to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country, says Mr. Jordan Ryan, UN Coordinator on the founding anniversary of the United Nations - the UN Day (Oct. 24).

Ordinance on safeguards in the import of foreign goods into VN

In order to enhance the State management over the economy, create conditions for the Vietnamese economy to effectively integrate into the international economy, restrict unfavourable impacts causing serious harm to the domestic production due to abnormal increases in the import of goods into Vietnam;

Initial achievements gained in administrative reform

Ha Noi, Oct. 24 (VNA) -- Positive achievements have been recorded in administrative reform in the first nine months of this year in the fields of institutional change and workforce organisation and streamlining.

The government initiated an administative reform programme for the 2001-02 period, including pilot implementation of new mechanisms.

Viet Nam pledges close cooperation in fighting terrorism

Ha Noi, Oct. 24 (VNA) -- Viet Nam renewed its anti-terrorism policy during the Interpol general assembly this week.

The annual assembly opened in Yaoundo, Cameroon, on Oct. 21 with police chiefs and law officials representing 171 Interpol member countries.

The Vietnamese delegation, led by Le The Tiem, Deputy Minister of Public Security stressed the country's stand, that no terrorist force would be allowed to operate in the country's territory and that cooperation with other countries in detecting and apprehending terrorists would be strengthened.

VN Airlines invites other joint stock airlines to domestic market

Ha Noi, Oct. 23 (VNA) -- Vietnam Airlines welcomes other joint stock airlines to join in competition in the domestic market, said Vietnam Airlines General Director Nguyen Xuan Hien in an interview published by Lao Dong newspaper today.

Vietnam Airlines has proposed to the government the establishment of a new joint stock airline which would work together with the joint stock Pacific Airlines and other partners to serve the domestic market.

Viet Nam's integration into APEC


Ha Noi, Oct. 23 (VNA) -- Upon realising the importance of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) for the development of regional economies, Viet Nam on June 15, 1996 officially applied to join the forum.
The decision to admit Viet Nam was first accepted at the fourth APEC Summit in Subic, the Philippines, on Nov. 30, 1996.

The country on April 25, 1997 has present at a guest at the APEC working groups on trade promotion, science and industrial technology, and agricultural technology cooperation.

VASC upholds Gold Cup at APICTA 2002


Viet Nam's Software Development Company VASC under Viet Nam Post & Telecommunication Corporation (VNPT) has overwhelmingly won a Gold Cup at the Asia-Pacific Information Communication Technology Awards (APICTA 2002) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from Sept. 2- 6.

APICTA 2002 attracted over 100 products from Viet Nam, China, Australia, the Republic of Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia, to compete in 13 IT and communication categories.

Ho Chi Minh City optimistic about anti-poverty scheme

Ho Chi Minh City, Oct. 20 (VNA)-- Ho Chi Minh City with a 5.4 million population, the largest in Viet Nam, is almost certain of achieving its goal to reduce the poverty rate to 3 percent by the end of this year.

The city announced that it had helped 19,374 families lift themselves out of poverty by mid-September against its yearly target of 20,000 families. The target, if achieved, means cutting nearly one-third of the total of 61,034 families listed early this year as living under the poverty line.

Losses in Mekong Delta provinces estimated at VND 284.6 billion

An Giang, Oct. 21 (VNA) -- Total losses suffered by flood-hit Mekong delta provinces have been estimated at 284.59 billion VND (18.97 million USD), according to reports from provincial Committees for Flood and Storm Control in the region.

These losses were equal to just one-third of last year's figure (934 billion VND).
