Losses in Mekong Delta provinces estimated at VND 284.6 billion
An Giang, Oct. 21 (VNA) -- Total losses suffered by flood-hit Mekong delta provinces have been estimated at 284.59 billion VND (18.97 million USD), according to reports from provincial Committees for Flood and Storm Control in the region.
These losses were equal to just one-third of last year's figure (934 billion VND).
Thanks to the local people and authorities' good preparations for the flood season, though this year's flooding level was higher than last year, the number of families having to evacuate their homes was 15,506 as compared to nearly 27,000 last year. The number of poor households in the region has also been reduced from 204,708 to 117,168.
Provinces in the upper reach of the flooded area have worked out plans to keep environmental hygiene and repair roads and schools to bring production and life back to normal. An Giang province has delivered the medicines which it received from the Health Ministry and the UNICEF to districts to prevent any possible outbreak of epidemic.
Meanwhile, provinces in the lower reach of the flooded area, including Can Tho, Vinh Long and Tien Giang are prepared to cope with the upcoming high tides.
