Groups, vets deliver wheelchairs to Vietnam

A group of Northland residents, including two Vietnam War veterans, leave today for Vietnam, where they will distribute 450 wheelchairs.

Sponsors of the trip are Hope Haven International Ministries of Rock Valley, Iowa, the local chapter of Wheels in Motion and the Northland Vietnam Veterans Association.

Fletcher Hinds and Tim Dieffenbacher, both St. Louis County social workers and Vietnam veterans, are joining a dozen others making the trip.

Viet Nam ready to work with US for future

HA NOI — Viet Nam is ready to join the US in building a framework for stable, long-term development that would benefit the peoples of both countries, Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien has told US officials.

This would also serve peace, stability and development in Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific, Nien said during a three-day visit to the US that ended on Thursday.

US centre thanked for help in fighting HIV



HA NOI — Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem used a seminar this week on preventing the spread of HIV among intravenous drug users to thank the international community for helping Viet Nam fight the killer disease.

Speaking with international delegates to the meeting on Thursday in Ha Noi, Khiem said Viet Nam appreciated the help it has received from the US Centre for Disease Control, the Ford Foundation, international doctors and scientists.

Ha Noi meeting seeks better use of BTA



HA NOI — Efforts to match the potential of the Viet Nam - US Bilateral Trade Agreement have been called for at a seminar in Ha Noi.

The three-day meeting titled, The BTA and Issues of Interest to the National Assembly (NA), ended last Friday.

A foreign ministry official said that representatives of many foreign businesses still complained about the lack of legal transparency and the limited protection of intellectual property rights.

The latter was a criteria used by the US for economic dealings with other countries.

I am now living in Viet Nam and am very sad that our government is thinking of passing a bill that will hurt this country and our own. That is the human rights bill on Vietnam. I have been here 3 years and know many Vietnamese police and government people and I have never seen any of the things that I hear coming out of Congress about Vietnam.
