US centre thanked for help in fighting HIV

HA NOI — Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem used a seminar this week on preventing the spread of HIV among intravenous drug users to thank the international community for helping Viet Nam fight the killer disease.

Speaking with international delegates to the meeting on Thursday in Ha Noi, Khiem said Viet Nam appreciated the help it has received from the US Centre for Disease Control, the Ford Foundation, international doctors and scientists.

He said he hopes international donor agencies, scientists and the World Health Organisation will continue to help Viet Nam implement its HIV/AIDs prevention strategy.

Khiem said new techniques for fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS presented during the seminar would be added to Viet Nam’s arsenal of ways to control the disease.

Representatives from the US Centre for Disease Control and the Ford Foundation pledged financial support to Viet Nam, as well as sharing new ways of preventing the spread of HIV/AIDs. — VNS
