U.S. funds survey of unexploded mines in Central Viet Nam


Ha Noi, Feb. 12 (VNA) -- The Viet Nam Veterans of America Foundation will help Viet Nam conduct landmine and unexploded ordnance data collection, field survey and data analysis in the central provinces of Quang Tri, Quang Binh and Ha Tinh.

This is the first phase of a comprehensive survey project to determine the density of unexploded mines and ordnance in Viet Nam.

U.S. State Department concerns Virginia House flag bill


Ha Noi, Feb. 11 (VNA) -- The U.S. State Department has affirmed that Virginia's House of Delegates bill HB-2829 allowing the display of the flag of the former South Viet Nam regime runs counter to the U.S. Constitution.

The U.S. has formally recognised the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, and said a spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Ha Noi, adding Viet Nam's gold-starred red flag is on public display in the U.S. along with other nations with which the U.S. has diplomatic relations.

Virginia's flag bill criticized


Ha Noi, Feb. 10 (VNA) -- More and more Vietnamese people inside and outside the country have criticized the Virginia House Rules Committee's Bill H.B. 2829, which would allow the flag of the former Sai Gon administration to be flown at public schools in Virginia State.

An overseas Vietnamese residing in the United States has written a letter, blasting a group of Vietnamese in Virginia who are urging the state's legislative agencies to approve the bill H.B. 2829.

Vietnamese associate prof. wins "Artisan Advocate Award"


New York, Feb. 5 (VNA) -- Associate Professor, Doctor Nguyen Van Huy, who is also Director of the Viet Nam Ethnology Museum and Chairman of the Ethnology Association, has been presented with the "Artisan Advocate Award" by the U.S. organisation, Aid to Artisans (ATA).

The Aid to Artisans held a ceremony in New York on Feb. 4 to confer the awards for the first time on a number of individuals who had contributed to renewing and maintaining handicraft occupations in the world.

Viet Nam slams US decision on Vietnamese catfish exports

Ha Noi, Jan. 28 (VNA) -- Viet Nam's foreign ministry spokeswoman Phan Thuy Thanh on Tuesday lashed out at the Jan. 27 decision of the US Department of Commerce (DOC) pertaining to the petition filed by the Catfish Farmers of America (CFA) against Viet Nam's frozen "Tra" and "Basa" fish fillets exported to the US market.

"Viet Nam deeply regrets this decision and cannot accept it," Thanh said, while responding to reporters' queries about Viet Nam's reaction to the DOC's decision.

VASEP rejects US preliminary decision on Viet Nam's tra and basa

Ho Chi Minh City, Jan. 28 (VNA) -- The Viet Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) on Tuesday strongly rejected the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC)'s preliminary decision on the anti-dumping duty investigation of certain frozen "basa" and "tra" fish fillets from Viet Nam.

U.S. helps Viet Nam prevent HIV/AIDS in workplaces


Ha Noi, Jan. 23 (VNA) -- The U.S. will provide 600,000 USD for a programme on prevention of HIV/AIDS in the workplace.

The aid was announced at a ceremony held in Ha Noi on Thursday to launch the SMART Work Programme (Strategically Managing AIDS Responses Together) to combat AIDS in Viet Nam.

The aid will be provided by the U.S. Depatment of Labour within a cooperation programme with Viet Nam's Ministry of Labour, Invalids, and Social Affairs (MOLISA).

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson on U.S. catfish decision

Ha Noi, Jan. 23 (VNA) -- An unfair decision issued by the U.S. Commerce Department on the "tra" and "basa" catfish law-suit will undermine the trust of Vietnamese and other foreign businesses in the U.S. trade liberalisation policy, a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.
