A Retired Colonel's view on VN's rights

As a veteran with 9 years service during the Vietnam war (U.S. Army infantry Colonel retired) and many years work in post-war Vietnam as an interpreter for high level U.S. delegations and over 10 years residence in Hanoi representing the General Electric Company, I find much of the anti-Vietnam commentary which continues to appear in newspapers and in testimony given at Congressional hearings to be surreal.

VN businesses aim for oversize US garment-textile fair

Econet - Twenty-nine Vietnamese garment and textile businesses will take part in a clothing and accessory fair in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, from August 30 to September 2.

Nguyen Son, deputy director of the Export Promotion Centre of the Vietnam Garment and Textile Corporation (Vinatex), said participation in this major garment fair is a promotional activity for the Vietnam Garment and Textile Association - Vinatex in particular - with a view to boosting exports to the US in the future.

Industrial production up for second trimester

Econet - State-owned enterprises increased industrial production by 11.8%. A year-on-year industrial production value increase of 15.4 % was seen over the January – August period, according to the Ministry of Industry.

State-owned enterprises increased production by 11.8%, private enterprises 21.6%, and foreign-invested firms 14.9%.

High growth was reported in coal, seafood processing, cotton, crude oil and knitwear production, despite the rising prices on petrol and other input materials.

Construction of new Tan Son Nhat airport starts

VietNamNet – Construction of the new Tan Son Nhat Airport began this morning, August 27, in HCM City.

The new airport is planned to open by the end of 2006, equipped with equipment that meets international standards, including 10 luggage conveyor belts, eight sky bridges, 20 escalators, 18 elevators, flight information boards and security equipment.

Vietnam to lay optical cable in 2008

VietNamNet – An 80Gbps optical cable route linking north and south should be operational by March 2008, according to the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT).

The corporation also plans to install two optical cables linking Vietnam – Hong Kong – Singapore, and Vietnam – Hong Kong.

Vietnam's Socio-Political Stability Keeps Foreign Investors

HANOI, Aug 19 Asia Pulse - One of the concerns of foreign investors in Vietnam is the socio-political situation, which Vietnam has kept stable over the past years, said Low Sin Leng, Chairman of the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park.

Low spoke with reporters about the success of Vietnam-Singapore cooperation on the sidelines of the two-day forum, "Investing in Vietnam: Insights, Strategies and Prospects" which opened in Hanoi on Tuesday.

Texas set to become a leading state investor in Vietnam

The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Office of the Texas Governor signed minutes on economic-tourism co-operation on Friday.

US Veterans Support Vietnamese Agent Orange Victims

An organization of former US soldiers in Vietnam War has approved a project to raise awareness and call for support of local residents to Vietnamese Agent Orange victims, according to a source from the Vietnam-US Association.

The campaign, scheduled to be launched next month, will educate US citizens about consequences of the toxic substance on the Vietnamese, and raise funds of $100,000 for research on the impacts and providing assistance to the Southeast Asian suffers.

US Tourists to Vietnam Surges 34.3% in Jan-Jul

Vietnam welcomed as many as 168,295 arrivals from the US in the first seven month of this year, up 34.3% on-year, making the U.S the second biggest market of the communist nation, following China and surpassing Taiwan and Japan, according to Vietnam's General Statistics Office (GSO).

In July alone, the number was reported to be at 28,502, up 28.2% on-month, GSO revealed.

VN Contemplates Raising Foreign Ownership Ratio at Local Business

The Vietnamese government should expand foreign investors' ownership ratios from the current 30% at local businesses in sectors and industries where full foreign direct investment (FDI) has been made, a financial expert said at a recent investment workshop.

The event was co-organized by the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the National Assembly Committee for Economy and Budget, and the Vietnamese Association of Financial Investors (VAFI), on August 12 in Hanoi.
