Religions operating normally amidst the nation

Ha Noi, Jan. 2 (VNA) -- Religions in Viet Nam operate normally amid the nation for construction, affirmed many priests attending the freshly-opened congress of Vietnamese Catholics.

The Party and State always respect the people's freedom of belief, priests affirmed. "Viet Nam has many religions, all have been operating well," Priest Nguyen Tan Khoa, acting Chairman of the Viet Nam Committee for Catholic Solidarity said.

Viet Nam slams Amnesty International's report on Tay Nguyen

Ha Noi, Dec. 19 (VNA) -- Viet Nam strongly rejects as a crude slander the Amnesty International's report which has accused Viet Nam of repressing ethnic minority people living in Tay Nguyen (the Central Highlands).

"This report has cynically distorted the reality in Tay Nguyen. We strongly reject it," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Phan Thuy Thanh said at a press briefing in Ha Noi today.

VIET NAM-EU HUMAN RIGHTS DIALOGUE HELD


Ha Noi, Dec. 5 (VNA) -- Viet Nam and European Union (EU) countries have exchanged views on human rights issues at a dialogue held in Ha Noi on Thursday.

They discussed a wide range of issues related to human rights, including those listed in the agenda of the 57th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations.

The host delegation underlined Viet Nam's consistent policy and drastic measures to protect and ensure the practice of human rights by the Vietnamese people.

Vietnam rejects recommendation from USCIRF

Vietnam has rejected the US Commission on International Religious Freedom's (USCIRF) recommendation that Vietnam be put on a special list of nations which restrict religious freedom.

"In Vietnam, the right to religious and non-religious freedom of all citizens is clearly stated in the Constitution and laws," said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Phan Thuy Thanh.

"This right has also been guaranteed in reality," she said while responding to a Reuters correspondent's query at a regular press briefing held on October 3.

US report on Vietnam's religious freedom criticised

Vietnam has criticised the US State Department's annual report on international religious freedom, saying "the report contained erroneous remarks about religious freedom in Vietnam."

"These remarks were based on biased and untrue information," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Phan Thuy Thanh stressed.

Asked by Vietnam News Agency (VNA) and AFP correspondents' queries about Vietnam's reaction to this annual report, the spokeswoman said "In the report, the US itself had recognised positive changes in Vietnam's religious situation."

La Vang festival for Catholics from 25 dioceses nationwide

Quang Tri, Aug. 15 (VNA) -- Tens of thousands of Catholics from 25 dioceses nationwide flocked to the 26th La Vang festival which was organised in the central province of Quang Tri from Aug. 13-15.

The authorities and the Viet Nam Fatherland Front Chapters of Quang Tri province, of Hai Lang district, and of Hai Phu commune created every favourable condition for the Catholics to practise their religion during the event.
