The United States and Vietnam will sign a landmark agreement this month that will allow direct passenger and cargo flights between two countries, during Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan's official visit to the US.

The Deputy Prime Minister begins his 11-day visit tomorrow following an agreement between the two governments, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The visit aims to boost co-operative relations between the two countries in diverse fields, particularly finance, trade, investment, science and technology.

The two countries reached a preliminary deal on direct air services in Hanoi on October 9 at the end of three days of talks.

Mr Khoan will be accompanied by Transport Minister Dao Dinh Binh, senior officials and a number of business people.

He will meet with senior US Government officials, members of Congress, business leaders and scientists, and will visit several sites in the US.
