US senator welcomed in Vietnam

(VNA) National Assembly Vice Chairman Tong Thi Phong received visiting US Senator Christopher S. Bond in Hanoi on January 11. At the reception, the NA Vice Chairman said she was pleased with the current developing ties between Vietnam and the US as well as the effective cooperation between the two countries’ parliaments in sharing law-making experiences.

She expressed her wish that in the coming time, the two sides will continue to expand their cooperation and hold more dialogues on such issues as energy, environment, crime prevention and addressing the war consequences.

Vietnam-US relations see rapid, practical developments

(VNA) The Vietnam-US relationship over the past 15 years is one of the bilateral ties that has seen the most rapid and practical developments, said Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Le Cong Phung.

Ambassador Phung told a Vietnam News Agency correspondent that 2009 was an eventful year for the bilateral relationship between Vietnam and the US despite no official high-ranking meetings.

State President Triet meets Pope

(VNA) State President Nguyen Minh Triet vowed to boost relations with the Vatican in the principle of respecting international law in the interest of world peace, cooperation and development.

He made the statement in a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI in Vatican on December 11.

The State leader reaffirmed Vietnam’s external policy of independence, self-reliance, friendliness, and as a trusted partner and responsible member of the international community.

Ha Long Bay’s 15th anniversary marked

(VNA) The 15th anniversary of Ha Long Bay’s recognition as a world natural heritage was celebrated in the northern coastal province of Quang Ninh on Dec. 15.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Quang Ninh provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Van Doc said that Ha Long Bay’s status as a world natural heritage site has helped more people in the world know Vietnam. The Ga Choi (Fighting Cock ) islet on the Ha Long Bay was selected as a symbol of Vietnam’s tourism sector in 2000.

25th SEA Games closes

(VNA) The 25th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) came to a successful end on Dec. 18 after ten days of competition with Vietnam ranking second in medal standings.

The final overall medals table reads Thailand on top with 86 golds, 83 silvers and 97 bronzes. Vietnam is second at 83-75-57 and Indonesia places third at 43-53-74.

Following top three countries in order are Malaysia , the Philippines , Singapore , Laos , Myanmar , Cambodia , Brunei and East Timor .

Vietnam’s exports to US to increase 10 percent

(VNA) Vietnam’s exports to the US will see an increase of at least 10 percent in 2010, according to Vietnamese commercial counsellor in the US Ngo Van Thoan.

Talking with the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in the US, Thoan said his forecast was based on the encouraging results in two-way trade between Vietnam and the US in 2009 despite difficulties caused by the global financial crisis.

Outstanding overseas Vietnamese honoured

(VNA) The Vietnamese Embassy in France and Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a meeting in Paris on Dec. 20 to honour overseas Vietnamese communities and individuals who fervently studied and followed the moral example of President Ho Chi Minh.

Vietnam, US seek ways to boost defence ties

(VNA) Vietnam and the US discussed ways to elevate their defence cooperation to a new level during Defence Minister Phung Quang Thanh’s visit to the US from December 10-15.

On December 15, Defence Minister Thanh held talks with his American counterpart Robert Gates at which they touched upon a wide range of issues in the bilateral defence ties together with regional and international issues of mutual concern.

VN, US target stronger defence cooperation

(VNA) Vietnam and the US agreed upon a number of measures to lift bilateral defence cooperation to a new level, said Minister of Defence General Phung Quang Thanh.

In an interview granted to the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) following his official visit to the US from Dec. 10-15, Minister Thanh said he held frank, open and constructive talks with his US counterpart Robert Gates.

Defence ties form part of the Vietnam-US bilateral relationship and do not affect any third country, the minister elaborated.
