US Group Gets Nod for $1.2 bln Resort in Vietnam Island

The US-based Rockingham Corporation has reached agreement in principle with Vietnam’s southern Kien Giang province to lease land for a US$1.2 billion tourism complex on Phu Quoc Island.
The province has agreed to make available 923 ha on the island but further details of the agreement are awaited. It will allot the land by next year.phuquoc.bmp

Keen Interest from the US Parlays into Big Investment Dollars

US investment inflows in Vietnam reportedly reached US$4.4 billion to date, fuelled by a series of recent large-scale projects on the books, according to statistics from the ministry of planning and investment.

Foreign direct investment projects to November from the US are reportedly worth $2 billion, ministry statistics said.

The balance was sourced from the US firms based in Hong Kong and Singapore.

Vietnam Mulls Ways to Make Elected Bodies More Efficient

A Vietnamese parliamentary committee has called for strengthening laws governing the functioning of local legislative bodies to make them more effective.

The National Assembly Standing Committee made the suggestion at a two-day conference on people’s councils (local legislatures) and people’s committees (local administrations) held Tuesday in Ho Chi Minh City.

It also called for enacting a new law to enable the people's councils to perform their tasks efficiently.

Vietnam to Build an Efficient E-government

There is a lot of room for improvement in establishing an e-government in Vietnam, heard a meeting themed “E-Government – the bridge linking government, businesses and people."

Only 49 out of 64 Vietnamese cities and provinces had launched official websites with 80 percent of them regularly updating the information, the Ministry of Posts and Telematics said.

Twenty-two out of 26 ministries and state agencies have websites online, but only 32 percent of them provided e-services for people.

Vietnam Spells out Diplomatic Tasks for 2007

Vietnam would continue to reinforce ties with other countries and integrate into the global and regional economies next year, a government spokesman said Thursday.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Dzung said the country would “consolidate multi-faceted cooperation frameworks with other countries, especially its neighbors, global powers, and important partners … in a deep, stable, and sustainable manner".

Vietnam National Assembly Ratifies Country’s WTO Membership

043.jpgThe Vietnamese legislature ratified Tuesday the country's accession protocol to the World Trade Organization by a massive vote, clearing the way for it to become the global trade body’s 150th member.
Vietnam's membership will take effect 30 days after the ratification – on December 28, that is – opening up foreign investment and trade in the region’s fastest-growing economy.
