Implementation of Mecong agreement reviewed




Feb. 24 (VNA) -- A conference to review Viet Nam's five-year implementation of the Mekong Agreement and discuss plans for economic development in the Mekong river basin was held in Ho Chi Minh City on Feb. 23.

The conference was told that Viet Nam actively took part in seven meetings of the Mekong River Commission Council, MRCC, and 12 meetings of the MRCC Union Committee held in four MRCC member countries, Viet Nam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand between 1995 and 2000.

Russian President to visit Vietnam




Ha Noi, Feb. 21 (VNA) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin will make an official visit to Viet Nam from Feb. 28 to March 2, the Foreign Ministry has announced.

It will be the first visit to Viet Nam by a Russian President.

Vietnam and Ku wait news agencies sign cooperation agreement




Feb. 19 (VNA) -- An agreement for information exchange was signed between Viet Nam News Agency, VNA, and Kuwaiti news agency, KUNA, in Kuwait City on Feb. 18.

The signing took place during the first meeting of the executive board of the Organization of Asian-Pacific News Agencies, OANA, and the Secretariat of the Federation of Arab News Agencies, FANA.

Signatories were KUNA President and General Director Mohammed Al. Ajeeri, and VNA Deputy General Director Nguyen Duy Cuong.

Vietnam and Russia seek ways to settle currency exchange



Ha Noi, Feb. 18 (VNA) -- Officials from Viet Nam and Russia's central banks are discussing in Ha Noi ways to remove difficulties in foreign exchange management policy, exchange rates, international payment, and opening of L/C for deferred payment relating to import-export operations by the two countries businesses.

The Russian officials, headed by a Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, are on a working visit to Viet Nam from Feb. 16-23, say sources from the International Relations Department of the State Bank of Viet Nam.

Vietnam military delegation arrive in Vientiane



Feb. 15 (VNA) -- A senior Viet Nam People's Army delegation led by Defence Minister Sen. Lieut. Gen. Pham Van Tra arrived in Vientiane this afternoon, Feb. 15, for an official friendship visit to Laos.

The delegation was received by member of the Political Bureau of the People's Revolutionary Party, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister of Laos Sen. Lieut. Gen. Chummaly Saynhason.

Singaporean President wraps up visit to Vietnam

Ha Noi, Feb. 9 (VNA) -- Singapore's President S.R. Nathan, who began an official friendship visit to Viet Nam on Feb. 7, left Ha Noi morning, Feb. 9, for Ho Chi Minh City.

The President, his wife and entourage were given a farewell party at the Presidential Palace and seen off by President Tran Duc Luong and his wife, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem, Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien, Presidential Office Director Nguyen Canh Dinh, Ha Noi People's Committee Chairman Hoang Van Nghien and other senior officials.

British MPs visit Vietnam




Ha Noi, Feb. 8 (VNA) -- Ten parliamentarians from Britain's Parliament's Committee for International Development are on a Feb. 5-10 visit to Viet Nam to inspect Viet Nam's socio-economic situation and British aid activities in the country.

On Feb. 8, the parliamentarians were received by Chairman of the Vietnamese National Assembly's Committee for External Relations Do Van Tai.

Do Van Tai thanked them for Britian's help to Viet Nam, especially non-refundable aid.

Gen. Secretary Le Kha Phieu's meeting with Singaporean President



Ha Noi, Feb. 8 (VNA) -- Viet Nam Communist Party General Secretary Le Kha Phieu has reiterated that Viet Nam's policy towards Singapore and other members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is unchanged and is intended to boost peace, stability and cooperation in the region and the world.

The General Secretary was speaking to visiting Singaporean President S.R. Nathan in Ha Noi on Feb. 8.
