Vietnam supports UN initiatives on sea development



May 13 (VNA) -- Viet Nam's representative to the United Nations on May 10 voiced support for the UN initiative on international cooperation in sea research and in the fight against piracy.

Addressing a five-day UN consultative meeting on oceanic and sea issues, the Vietnamese representative said piracy has emerged as a global problem and that international efforts are needed to bring it under control.

He shared other delegates' view on the seriousness of the problem and called for closer regional cooperation in fighting it.

Vietnamese and French leaders agree to boost cooperation



May 10 (VNA) -- Viet Nam's Vice President Nguyen Thi Binh; France's President, Jacques Chirac; and Senate President, Christian Poncelet; have agreed to deepen Viet Nam-France cooperation bilaterally and multilaterally in all areas, political, economic, cultural, sientific- technical, and training.

UNDCP officer says Vietnam serious in drug fight



Ha Noi, May 9 (VNA)-- A programme officer of the United Nations Drug Control Programme (UNDCP) in Ha Noi has appreciated Viet Nam's achievements in drug control that, therefore, the country deserved more international help.

Pev Vogel was addressing a UNDCP-sponsored regional conference on drug control on May 8 in Yuangon, Myanmar, which was participated by Viet Nam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and China besides the host country.

Pev Vogel said Viet Nam has efficiently fought drug crime in recent years.

Vietnam wishes to boost cooperation with Francophonie



Ha Noi, May 9 (VNA) -- Viet Nam attaches importance to the development of cooperation with the Inter-governmental Francophonie Agency (AIF), said Foreign Minister, Nguyen Dy Nien, to visiting AIF General Director, Roger Dehaybe, in Ha Noi on May 8.

The FM stressed that Viet Nam wishes to further cooperate with the AIF in economics, culture, education, information technology, and youth affairs.

Pakistani Chief Executive concluded visit to Vietnam



Ha Noi, May 5 (VNA) -- Chief Executive of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Gen. Pervez Musharraf concluded a three-day official friendship visit to Viet Nam on May 5.

The visit was made at the invitation of Prime Minister Phan Van Khai.

While in Viet Nam, Gen. Musharraf paid a courtesy visit to President Tran Duc Luong, held talks with PM Khai, paid floral tributes to President Ho Chi Minh at his Mausoleum and visited the late President's residence and office in Ha Noi.

PM Phan Van Khai and Pervez Musharraf hold talks



Ha Noi, May 3 (VNA) -- Prime Minister Phan Van Khai held talks with Chief Executive of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan General Pervez Musharraf shortly after his arrival here today, May 3, for a three-day official visit to Viet Nam.

Also present at the talks were, on the Pakistani side, Prof. Dr Atta Ur Rehman, Minister of Science-Technology; Tariq Ikram, Secretary of State for Trade; Inam Ul Haque, Foreign Ministry Secretary, and other senior officials.

Pakistani leader arrives for official visit to Vietnam



Ha Noi, May 3 (VNA) -- Chief Executive of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Gen. Pervez Musharraf arrived in Ha Noi today, May 3, beginning a three-day official friendship visit to Viet Nam.

The Pakistani leader and his wife and entourage were welcomed at a grand ceremony held at the Presidential Palace in the presence of Prime Minister Phan Van Khai and his wife and other senior Government officials.

The military band struck up the national anthems of the two countries.

FM Spokeswoman on S.Korean soldier's killing of VN civilians



On May 3rd, 2001, Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Phan Thuy Thanh, answering question for Viet Nam's viewpoint on South Korean public opinions' demand for an investigation into South Korean soldiers' killings of Vietnamese civilians during the Viet Nam war, said:

"We think that the most practical way to get rid of a haunted memory of the past is that those countries which were Viet Nam's erstwhile foes should have practical deeds to help settle the war consequences in Viet Nam, especially through their effective cooperation with Viet Nam."

Party leader and Thai PM affirm to boost ties


Ha Noi, April 25 (VNA) -- Both Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh and Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra affirmed the two countries' desire to constantly boost their friendship and cooperation, especially in agriculture, tourism, science and technology.

Nong Duc Manh was receiving the Thai PM in Ha Noi on April 25 during the later's two-day official visit to Viet Nam.
