Gong Festival Kicks off in Central Highlands

Vietnam’s Central Highlands province of Daklak opened a cong chieng (gong) festival in the capital town of Buon Ma Thuot on Monday evening. tay_nguyen.jpg
The fifth Gong Cultural Festival attracted 430 gong artists of the ethnic minority groups – E De, M’Nong, J’rai, Van Kieu, Tay, Thai from 13 districts and towns in Daklak.

Vietnam to Host Asia-Pacific Photo Forum

Vietnam will host the Asia-Pacific Photography forum 'Crossing Bridges' at the end of August.

This year will see Crossing Bridges in Sapa and Hanoi with participation of 40 foreign photographers and Vietnamese members of photography websites.

Crossing Bridges links photographers across the Asian-Pacific region. Over the past three years the forum has gathered a number of brilliant figures with more than 100,000 members from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and recently Vietnam.

One Million Followers Attend Hoa Hao Buddhist Sect's Celebrations

An Giang  - Nearly one million followers of the Hoa Hao Buddhist Sect in Mekong Delta provinces and Ho Chi Minh City gathered in Phu My town of Phu Tan district, An Giang province, to celebrate the Sect's 67th founding anniversary on the 18th of the fifth lunar month (June 13).

Representatives from the Government Committee for Religious Affairs and An Giang provincial officials took part in the ceremony, which was solemnly held at An Hoa Tu Pagoda.

Professor and Doctor of Ethnomusicology Nguyen Thuyet Phong, a Vietnamese-American, has over the past 30 years worked untiringly for the promotion of Vietnamese music, especially folk music, with an attempt to make it a language for communication between Vietnam and the world.

Coming from a family of prominent musicians in the Mekong Delta, Phong practised music with a village master from the age of five and joined in performance of both cai luong (reformed theatre) and hat boi (classical theatre) from the age of 10.

Highlands Gong Festival Marks World Heritage Recognition

A cong chieng (gong) festival kicked off in Gia Lai province Tuesday evening to formally receive UNESCO’s certification recognizing Vietnam’s Central Highland gong culture as an intangible cultural heritage.

Many country’s leaders, including President Tran Duc Luong, attended the opening ceremony.

Tet Viet 2006 Showcases Lunar New Year Traditions

Hanoi is hosting a week-long cultural and commercial festival as part of lunar New Year (Tet) celebrations, providing visitors a chance to learn about Vietnam’s traditions and culture. Tet Viet 2006, being held at the My Dinh National Stadium, has more than 200 pavilions showcasing a range of flowers and ornamental plants, and food and beverages used in celebrating Tet. The program also includes the Spring Sporting Festival featuring martial arts performances, wresting, Chinese chess, and human chess competitions.
