Role of Foreign-invested enterprises in Vietnam



Ha Noi, Nov. 2 (VNA) -- Foreign-invested enterprises (FIEs) in the country have posted an industrial output value of VND 6,648 billion in October, an increase of 20.1 percent over same period last year.

This brings the total in the first ten months to VND 59,763 billion, up by 17.5 percent over last year, and accounts for 36 percent of the country's total industrial output. The oil and gas sector made up VND 18,378 billion of the total output.

Direct flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Tokyo since Nov. 1st 2000




Ha Noi, Nov. 2 (VNA) -- The national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines, in coordination with Japan Airlines, held a ceremony in the Japanese capital of Tokyo on Nov. 1 to inaugurate a direct flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Tokyo.

Under a code-sharing agreement between the two airlines, both airlines will operate non-stop flights at maximum capacity for the new route and they will conduct four flights a week.

3,1 million telephone subscribers in Vietnam


Ha Noi, Nov. 1 (VNA) -- Viet Nam now has nearly 3.1 million telephone subscribers and 90,000 Internet subscribers, according to the Viet Nam Post and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT).

As many as 2.4 million are regular telephone subscribers and the remainder use mobile phones.

The VNPT has so far this year installed 637,000 telephones, up 37,000 from the target for 2000. Of these, there were 340,000 pre-paid mobile phones.

10,000 businesses set up under new Enterprise Law



Ha Noi, Oct. 30 (VNA) -- The Water and Development Joint Stock Company in Ho Chi Minh City became the 10,000th business set up under the revised Enterprise Law on Oct. 10.
The company, with a registered capital of VND 15 billion (USD 1.07 million) will be involved in the exploitation, treatment and trade of safe water, civil engineering, water supply and drainage projects, forest and industrial tree planting projects.

Vietnam Airlines opens new route to Laos and Cambodia



Oct. 29 (VNA) -- A ceremony to inaugurate a new air route from Ha Noi via Vientiane and Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City was held at Wattay International Airport, Vientiane city, on Oct. 29 by Vientiane-based branch of the national flag carrier, Vietnam Airlines.

The first regular flight on the new route Ha Noi (Viet Nam)-Vientiane (Laos)-Phnome Penh (Cambodia)-Ho Chi Minh City (Viet Nam) and vice versa was implemented by Vietnam Airlines under an agreement on air transport cooperation

Economic growth rate 7-7,5% for 2001

Ha Noi, October 27 (VNA) -- Viet Nam has set the economic growth rate between 7 - 7.5 percent for the next year (2001), Minister of Planning and Investment Tran Xuan Gia said on Oct. 26.

686,000 tonnes of coffee export in 1999-2000 crop




Ha Noi, Oct. 25 (VNA) - Viet Nam has exported 689,000 tonnes of coffee in the 1999-2000 crop (lasting from October, 1999 to September, 2000), 69 percent more than was exported from the previous crop.

This was announced at a conference to review coffee production and exports in the 1999-2000 crop and to work out strategies for the 2000-2001 crop and years to come. The conference was held in Ha Noi on Oct. 24 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), the Ministry of Trade and the Viet Nam Coffee and Cacao Association.

350,000 employees in foreign- invested sector


Ha Noi, Oct. 23 (VNA) -- As many as 349,000 people are working in the foreign-invested sector in Viet Nam, according to the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

Labourers working for Taiwanese, Hongkong, Korean, and Japanese-invested projects make up 71 percent of the total labour force in the foreign-invested sector.

In the first nine months of this year, 190 foreign-invested projects capitalized at more than USD 512 million
were licensed for operation across the country.

US $16.5 billion foreign capital was implemented by October, 2000


The Ministry of Planning and Investment said that by October this year, about US $16.5 billion of foreign invested capital was implemented, meaning 46.5% of committed capital of 2,541 valid projects.

The top position in implementing projects came to Japanese investors with US $2.356 billion followed by Taiwanese investors, nearly US $2 billion while Korean investors came third with US $1.837 billion. The fourth and fifth in the list are Singapore and Hong Kong with US $1.8 billion and US $1.333 billion, respectively.

Six million new jobs created during 1996-2000



Six million one hundred thousand new jobs were created during the 1996-2000 period. The number of employed people in 2000 is 40.7 million while that number for 1995 was 34.6 million.

There are 23.5 million people working in the agriculture, fisheries and forestry sectors. These sectors have created nearly two million new jobs in the past five years. The industry, handicraft and construction sectors created 2.2 million new jobs while the service sector created 2.3 to 2.4 million new jobs.
