VN, China lead region’s growth



SYDNEY — Asia-Pacific countries are predicted to have the world’s fastest growing economies this year, led by China and Viet Nam.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) made the forecast in this month’s World Economic Outlook, saying China and Viet Nam will average 7.4 per cent growth this year and predicting even more dynamic figures next year.

Grip loosens on dong loans to SMEs



HA NOI — The State Bank of Viet Nam will loosen regulations which restrict the use of Vietnamese dong by foreign banks to give small-and-medium-sized firms a better chance of obtaining loans, the bank’s governor Le Duc Thuy said last Sunday.

"The loosening will create competition on the credit market so that banking services will be improved," Thuy told young entrepreneurs getting Vietnamese golden star awards at a meeting in Ha Noi last weekend.

Viet Nam's eight-month export value - US$ 13.3 billion

Ha Noi, Aug. 26 (VNA) - Viet Nam's export value grew at 27.5 percent to 13.3 billion USD in the first eight months of this year, with the foreign-invested sector posting a 38.2 percent growth to nearly 6.7 billion USD and the domestic economic sector, 18.3 percent, said the General Statistics Office.

Coffee enjoyed the highest growing rate of 64.5 percent in export value, due to the hike in prices, while the volume of exports decreased by 6 percent year-on-year.

Domestic firms call for competition reforms

The entrepreneurs sounded the warning at a symposium in Ha Noi on Sunday, where they gathered to suggest ways to stimulate a domestic economy they described as "not competitive and sluggish."

HA NOI — Viet Nam is accelerating its negotiations to join the World Trade Organisation by 2005 to ensure greater access to overseas markets, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan said on Tuesday.

Speaking at the opening of a two-day seminar about Viet Nam’s bid to join the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Khoan said the membership move would benefit enterprises and consumers, as well as restructure the whole economy.

Local shrimp exporters urged to reduce heavy reliance on America

America's Southern Shrimp Alliance (SSA) a coalition of eight southern and eastern seaboard states may file legal action against foreign shrimp exporters, including of Vietnam, said Deputy Fisheries Minister Nguyen Thi Hong Minh.

Speaking at a conference of shrimp exporters in HCMC on Saturday, she said the best way to deal with the situation was to "cut shrimp shipments to the U. S. market."

Vietnam eases foreign ownership rules

Vietnam has eased restrictions on foreign ownership of listed companies as part as an effort to stimulate interest in the country's three-year-old equity market.

Prime Minister Phan Van Khai approved an increase in the foreign ownership of listed companies to 30 per cent, addressing a Vietnamese legal anomaly that allowed foreign investors to hold up to 30 per cent of unlisted enterprises, but capped their holdings in listed firms at 20 per cent.

Foreign lawyers permitted to operate in Viet Nam

Ha Noi, July 24 (VNA) - Foreign lawyers' organisations and foreign lawyers are now allowed to operate in Viet Nam under a decree signed on Tuesday by Prime Minister Phan Van Khai.

This decree stipulates that the Vietnamese Government will ensure non-discrimination among foreign lawyers' organisations and foreign lawyers practising in Viet Nam and will protect their ownership of their investment capital and other legal interests.
