Vietnamese Women Artist Tour the US

Changing Identity introduces the work of ten contemporary Vietnamese women artists who challenge the stereotypes and traditional roles of women in Vietnamese society. This exhibition is the first survey of women artists from Vietnam to tour the United States. Through the use of various media, subject matters, and aesthetic sensibilities, two generations of artists share views of their country and the changing status of women. Together their work provides a diverse view of Vietnam itself, reflecting a range of opinions and experiences.

WB forecasts Vietnam’s 2007-08 GDP growth to top region

Vietnam’s economy could expand by 8 percent in 2007 and 2008, the highest growth rate in the Southeast Asia, World Bank forecasts in a report released Thursday.

The World Bank’s East Asia and Pacific Updates report estimated the country’s GDP growth last year at 8.2 percent, which was supported by across-the-board strength in exports, consumption and investment.

The report noted that investment in Vietnam had been boosted by a surge in foreign direct investment before the economy’s accession to the World Trade Organization in January.

International Virtual Private Network launched in Viet Nam

Viet Nam Telecom International (VTI) launched an International Virtual Private Network (I-VPN) service in Ho Chi Minh City on March 29.

The service will enable enterprises in Viet Nam to link to other facilities worldwide through local VNPT network.

Intel Starts Construction of $1 bln Vietnam Chip Facility

US chip giant Intel began building Wednesday its US$1 billion computer component facility in Ho Chi Minh City’s Saigon Hi-Tech Park (SHTP). The chip assembly and testing plant is scheduled to start production in mid-2009.

It will be Intel’s largest global chip manufacturing facility and a model for its chip assembly and testing systems.

Intel received an amended license last November after scaling up investment from US$605 million to $1 billion.

Vatican Dignitaries Visit Vietnam

A Vatican delegation led by Monsignor Pietro Parolin, who is the Vatican Under-Secretary of State for Relations with States, has been in Viet Nam for a working visit since Mar. 5.

The Vatican representatives made the visit after getting the approval from Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

On Mar. 6, they had working sessions with a Vietnamese delegation headed by Nguyen The Doanh, Vice Head of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs. The Vietnamese delegation also included officials from the Foreign Ministry.

Vietnam agency becomes US quality certifier’s partner

Vinacert has become the Vietnamese representative for the US’s ABS Quality Evaluations and will certify Vietnamese exports to the US.

Following its agreement with ABS the Vietnamese quality certification agency will provide certification for four kinds of management systems: ISO 9000 for management quality; HACCP/ISO22000:2005 for food safety; ISO14000:2400 for environmental quality; and OSHAS1800 for health and occupational diseases.

Vinacert will assist ABS QE in creating a local team of evaluation experts this year.
