Crack down on drugs conducts nationwide



Ha Noi, Oct. 30 (VNA) -- A crack down on drugs will be conducted nationwide from today, Oct. 30, to Jan. 30, 2001 as announced at a conference held recently in Ha Noi by the Ministry of Public Security.

At the conference to review the country's fight against drugs in 2000 it was reported that anti-drug forces have so far this year detected nearly 9,000 drug-related cases involving 16,200 people.

10,000 businesses set up under new Enterprise Law



Ha Noi, Oct. 30 (VNA) -- The Water and Development Joint Stock Company in Ho Chi Minh City became the 10,000th business set up under the revised Enterprise Law on Oct. 10.
The company, with a registered capital of VND 15 billion (USD 1.07 million) will be involved in the exploitation, treatment and trade of safe water, civil engineering, water supply and drainage projects, forest and industrial tree planting projects.

Vietnam Airlines opens new route to Laos and Cambodia



Oct. 29 (VNA) -- A ceremony to inaugurate a new air route from Ha Noi via Vientiane and Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City was held at Wattay International Airport, Vientiane city, on Oct. 29 by Vientiane-based branch of the national flag carrier, Vietnam Airlines.

The first regular flight on the new route Ha Noi (Viet Nam)-Vientiane (Laos)-Phnome Penh (Cambodia)-Ho Chi Minh City (Viet Nam) and vice versa was implemented by Vietnam Airlines under an agreement on air transport cooperation

Results of labor - employment census in Vietnam



Ha Noi, Oct. 28 (VNA) -- The national labor-employment census to July 1, 2000 made it known that the number of jobs increased and the rate of unemployment continued falling in Viet Nam.

The results of the census, made public on Oct. 27, indicated that the total number of people aged from 15 upwards reached 54,269,798 and those of working age, 46,249,428 in the whole country.

The rate of unemployment was 6.44 percent nationwide, with 7.95 percent being recorded in Ha Noi and 6.48 percent, in Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnam supports UN Convention on the Law of the Sea


Oct. 27 (VNA) -- Ambassador Pham Binh Minh, Deputy Permanant representative of Viet Nam to United Nations expressed appreciation and satisfaction for the tremendous efforts and valuable contribution made by the Division of Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (the Office of Legal Affairs), other international institutions relating to the question of "Oceans and the Law of the Sea" this year.

Guidelines for HIV/AIDS control activities in Vietnam



Ha Noi, Oct. 27 (VNA) -- The Ministry of Public Health today, Oct. 27, unveiled documents guiding the ways to conduct HIV/AIDS control activities for provincial agencies.

The guidelines will be provided to all provinces and cities nationwide.

The guidance set includes 7 guiding books, 13 reference books on HIV/AIDS, 18 communication models, 11 hand books for training, five video cassets for peer members' training.

Economic growth rate 7-7,5% for 2001

Development for the poorest communes in Vietnam


Ha Noi, Oct. 28 (VNA) -- So far this year VND 565 billion (USD 40.4 million) has been invested in 2,977 infrastructure projects in the country's poorest communes as part of a government programme on socio-economic development in mountainous and remote areas (Programme 135).

Of the projects, 1,098 with a combined capital of VND 257 billion (USD 18.4 million) focused on building roads and 602 others capitalized at VND 98 billion (USD 7 million), on building irrigation systems.

Vietnam wants to boost relations with Chile



The Chilean Deputy Foreign Minister Heraldo Munoz is on a three-day visit to Viet Nam from Oct. 24, made in futherance of the two foreign ministries' agreement on political consultation. On Oct. 25 he was received by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Manh Cam.

686,000 tonnes of coffee export in 1999-2000 crop




Ha Noi, Oct. 25 (VNA) - Viet Nam has exported 689,000 tonnes of coffee in the 1999-2000 crop (lasting from October, 1999 to September, 2000), 69 percent more than was exported from the previous crop.

This was announced at a conference to review coffee production and exports in the 1999-2000 crop and to work out strategies for the 2000-2001 crop and years to come. The conference was held in Ha Noi on Oct. 24 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), the Ministry of Trade and the Viet Nam Coffee and Cacao Association.
