Projects on AIDS awareness launched in HCMC

VietNamNet – HCM City has launched two HIV/AIDS control projects funded by the Global Fund and DFID, dedicated to change people’s awareness on people living with HIV/AIDS and HIV/AIDS control among communities.

The Global Fund project will be carried out in the districts of 1, 4, 5, 6, Go Vap, Phu Nhuan and the Phu Van Drug Addict Rehabilitation at a cost of VND1.4bil in 2004. Under the project, the first centres providing free HIV/AIDS testing will be set up in those districts.

The project aims to strengthen HIV/AIDS patient care and HIV/AIDS control in HCM City.

Meanwhile, the project funded by DFID will be conducted in the districts of 1, 6, 8, 12, Go Vap, Phu Nhuan, Thu Duc, the Phu Van Drug Addict Rehabilitation and the Nha Be Garment Company at a cost of US$130,000 for five years.

To ensure equality, a council will be established to select the first HIV/AIDS patients who will be treated free of charge with the following priority orders: HIV/AIDS workers who get this disease from their jobs; children who inherit this disease from their mothers; HIV/AIDS patients who positively participate in HIV/AIDS control movements; and pregnant women.

The programme to fight against HIV/AIDS infection from mothers to children will be also promoted in the coming time. If this programme is conducted widely, around 300 children in HCM City will be protected contracting this disease form their mothers.
