President asks front to nurture democracy

HA NOI — President Tran Duc Luong wants the Viet Nam Fatherland Front Central Committee to play a greater role in ensuring grassroots democracy.

Such democracy was necessary to making the people understand, discuss, participate and supervise the workings of the State, he told members of the Central Committee, including the president of presidium Pham The Duyet and the committee’s General Secretary Huynh Dam.

He specifically asked the committee to campaign for more participation by people in drafting laws such as those for electing people’s committees, land-use and the criminal procedures code.

The President said he believed that grassroots democracy would create huge strength in the process of national building.

The president praised the efforts of the committee in disseminating the Viet Nam Communist Party’s resolutions to the population and asked it to focus on the country’s intellectuals and religious dignitaries.

The Committee’s General Secretary Huynh Dam briefed the president about the front’s tasks and emphasised its implementation of resolutions to strengthen national unity carried by the Communist Party Central Committee’s 7th plenum. — VNS
