Viet Nam covers all bases against SARS
HA NOI (April 2, 2003) — All people entering Viet Nam will be required to make a health declaration in an attempt to keep the fatal SARS virus at bay, the Ministry of Health announced on Sunday.
The ministry has issued all air, land and sea entry points with appropriate forms, and hopes that the initiative will improve available information needed to keep the lid on deadly disease.
Medical departments around the country were also instructed to be vigilant for signs of an outbreak, and take preventive measures if possible cases are detected.
Deputy General Director of the northern Airport Authority Nguyen Hoang Cuc issued an assurance on Monday that adequate steps are being taken both to monitor the situation and treat people infected with the illness.
A task force has been set up to follow flights from all SARS-hit countries and territories, especially Hong Kong.
Any fights carrying suspected cases will be isolated upon landing and the passengers quarantined or given check-ups and treatment at the Institute for Tropical Diseases.
According to the World Health Organisation, Viet Nam has significantly controlled the outbreak of atypical pneumonia though the situation elsewhere continues to be gloomy.
The National SARS Control Committee also held a workshop on Monday to work out detailed measures for Viet Nam’s border gates in the provinces of Quang Ninh, Lang Son, Cao Bang, Lao Cai, Ha Giang and Lai Chau, and the port city of Hai Phong.
The committee distributed 6,200 masks, 1,400 protection suits, and 1,400 pairs of gloves, donated by the Japanese Government.
No more cases of SARS have been reported since Monday last week. Twenty-six patients have returned home, while a further 22 have recovered and are waiting to be discharged. Of the 10 people still hospitalised, eight are improving, the committee said. — VNS
