Viet Nam's viewpoints on current international issues

Ha Noi, Dec. 19 (VNA) -- "Viet Nam hopes that an enlarged EU will actively contribute to peace, stability and development in Europe and the world," said Viet Nam's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Phan Thuy Thanh.

Thanh was answering questions on Viet Nam's reaction to the European Union (EU)'s decision at the Copenhagen summit to enlarge the EU by admitting 10 new members during a regular press conference in Ha Noi on Thursday.

The spokeswoman said: "The enlargement of the EU with the admission of new members is a new step forward in the process of uniting Europe."
About Viet Nam's viewpoint on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s announcement that it will reactivate its nuclear facilities, Thanh said:

"For a Korean peninsula of peace, stability and free from nuclear weapons, we hope that the parties concerned will settle all differences through peaceful negotiations."

In reply to AFP's question on Viet Nam's reaction to the U.S. decision to begin deploying NMD system, Thanh said."

"We express our concern about actions that may lead to a new arms race."

"Viet Nam holds that all countries should make efforts for a comprehensive and complete disarmament, first of all disarmament of nuclear weapons and other mass destruction weapons, the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman affirmed.
