Deputy Prime Minister on Viet Nam - Russia cooperation

Ha Noi, Dec. 26 (VNA) -- Russia expressed keen interest in taking part in the building of the freshly-approved Son La hydro-electric power plant at the Viet Nam-Russia metting and the intention was welcomed, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan said.

Meeting with Quan Doi Nhan Dan daily on Tuesday at the end of the two-day meeting of the Viet Nam-Russia Inter-Governmental Committee on Economic, Trade, Scientific and Technological Cooperation, Deputy PM Khoan said the two sides reached a consensus on putting into effect Russia's commitment to provide a 100-million USD credit for Viet Nam's purchase of equipment for the Plei Krong and Se San-3 hydro-electric power plants.

On the two countries' trade in the future, Khoan said the two sides did not set any specific targets for their two-way trade exchange at this meeting.

"Specifying a target for the Viet Nam-Russia trade can be seen as a goal for the two countries to strive for, but how to raise their two-way trade turnover is dependent much on the market," he underlined.

The Russian side also showed its interest in joint-exploitation of coal in Viet Nam, saying it is ready to give credit to help Viet Nam buy Russian-made mining machinery for the industry, Khoan said, adding that the two sides will discuss an establishment of a mining joint venture.

In addition, the Vietnamese and Russian sides agreed to continue their cooperation within the Vietsovpetro framework.

Regarding the building of the Dung Quat oil refinery, he elaborated that Russia will take part in the project as a contractor of some specific parts, and Viet Nam is the project's sole owner.

This was unanimously agreed upon by the two sides, aiming at facilitating the two countries' future cooperation, Deputy PM Khoan stressed.
