Viet Nam welcomes 2.18 million tourists in ten months

Ha Noi, Nov. 1 (VNA) -- As many as 2.18 million foreign tourists arrived in Viet Nam in the first ten months of this year, a year-on-year increase of 11.3 percent.

During the reviewed period, the tourism sector also provided service to around 10 million local people, reports the Viet Nam Tourism Administration (VTA).

The VTA has also completed the plan to spuce up the Tuyen lake in the central highlands province of Lam Dong and Tan Lap floating village in the southern province of Long An with the aim of making them attractive tourist sites.

Plan on development tourism of the northern province of Thai Binh and that of southern Sam Son beach of the central province of Thanh Hoa were also completed.

The VTA has submitted a draft agreement on ASEAN Tourism Treaty to the Government for approval, which will be signed at the ASEAN Summit in Cambodia this month.

Viet Nam participated in many countries' festivals, namely the ASEAN Tourism Festival in Japan, the Top Resa in France, and the Road Show in in Sydney, and others.

Also in ten months, as many as 17 foreign-invested tourism projects were licensed with a combined investment capital of 133.2 million USD.

In November, Viet Nam will attend conferences on tourism in China, India and Taiwan; take part in Road Show fair in the United Kingdom; and set up tourism promotion offices in France and Japan.

The VTA has made preparations to sign an agreement on tourism cooperation with Japan and a plan on 2003-05 tourism cooperation with Malaysia.
