Committee of religious reform of Cao Dai executive council meets

Ben Tre, Nov. 18 (VNA) -- The Committee of Religious Reform of Cao Dai Executive Council met at the Ben Tre church in Mekong delta Ben Tre province on Nov. 17-18 with the participation of nearly 900 delegates nationwide.

The purpose of the meeting was to review the Committee's operation in the first term (1997-2002) and decide on a working plan for the Committee and elect a new Standing Board of the Cao Dai Executive Council for the second term (2002-07).

Reviewing the 1997-2002 term, the Standing Board of the Cao Dai Executive Council affirmed that dignitaries and Caodaists of the Committee of Religious Reform have made important achievements in implementing the religion's charter and guidelines, exercising law, and practising the religion in harmony with social life.

Caodaists and dignitaries have actively taken part in charitable work, including organising free-of-charge medical checks-up and giving relief aid to natural calamity victims and those who live in difficulty.

Speaking at the meeting, leaders of the Central Committee of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front, the Government's Religious Board, and the Ben Tre province, expressed their wish that in the second term, the Committee of Religious Reform of Cao Dai Executive Council will work harder to overcome shortcomings to unanimously practise the religion under the leadership of the Cao Dai Executive Council, promtly respond to the country's emulation movements, improve the living conditions of Caodai followers, and actively participate in social activities, inluding movement "Let the entire people unite in building a new life style in residential quarters".

A nine-member Standing Board of the Cao Dai Executive Council for the 2002-07 term was elected.
