East Asian development co-operation: FM Nien
Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien affirmed the value of lessons on economic development in combination with poverty reduction in Southeast Asian nations over the recent past.
Speaking at the ministerial meeting on East Asian initiatives for development held in Tokyo on Monday, August 12, Mr Nien said the development co-operation relations have effectively helped the Vietnamese government and people maintain the high economic growth and reduce poverty.
Vietnam's enormous achievements have been highly appreciated by the international donors' community, he said.
On challenges being faced by Vietnam and other regional countries, Mr Nien stressed the importance of strengthening and developing partnership for mutual benefit in development co-operation between developing countries and donors, on the principle of harmonising interests, respecting and ensuring independence of partners, particularly recipients.
Mr Nien thanked the governments of donor countries, particularly Japan - the biggest donor of Vietnam - for their valuable aid. He said that development co-operation, particularly aid for less developed countries of the ASEAN grouping, has helped maintain peace, stability and prosperity in the region. (VNA)
