High turnout of the 11th National Assembly election on May 19

Ha Noi, May 20 (VNA) -- The national turnout of the 11th National Assembly election on May 19 reached 98.85 percent, reported the Information Board of the Electoral Council in a press release available on May 20. Voters will chose 498 representatives from 759 candidates.

The press release said 49,211,275, of the registered 49,783,769, voters nationwide went to the polls.

Feedback from all over the country has shown voters' satisfaction with the preparation of the election, which, most said, complied with law.

Many cities and provinces recorded turnouts of more than 99 percent, according to prelimary reports recorded at 22:00 hrs on May 19. Central Da Nang city, and southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, led the country with a rate of 99.99 percent.

They were followed by central Thua Thien-Hue province with 99.98 percent; midland Phu Tho province, 99.89 percent; northern Bac Giang province, 99.7 percent; central Quang Binh province, 99.69 percent; central Quang Ngai province, 99.55 percent; northern Hai Phong city, 99.45 percent; northern midland Vinh Phuc province and northern mountainous Thai Nguyen province, 99.4 percent; Ho Chi Minh City, 99.37 percent; central Phu Yen province, 99.03 percent; southern An Giang and Binh Phuoc provinces and northern Yen Bai province, 99 percent.

Vote counting is going on in all constituencies now, reported the Electoral Council.

According to NA Chairman and President of the Electoral Council Nguyen Van AnHa Noi, the counting of votes and the settlement of petitions, if any, relating to successul NA candidates will be conducted in weeks after the polling day.

He said that pursuant to the Law on Election of Deputies to the National Assembly, the counting of votes is conducted right at polling stations upon the closing time. The minutes of vote counting must be forwarded within three days after the polling day (May 22) to commune/ward level electoral boards, people's councils, people's committees, and Fatherland Fronts, who will then check the reported results before making a report on their commune/ward election results.

The commune/ward election reports, An added, will be then submitted to provincial/municipal level electoral committees, people's councils, people's committees, and Fatherland Fronts within five days after the polling day (or May 24 in this case).

The commune/ward election reports are set to be re-examined by provincial/municipal level electoral committees, who will also settle petitions (if any) relating to successfull NA candidates.
