Preparation for National Assembly election on May 19


Ha Noi, Apr. 13 (VNA) -- Preparations for the nationwide May 19 National Assembly elections have been progressing smoothly, the NA Standing Committee announced in Ha Noi on Apr. 13.

It added that according to local reports presented at the May 13 meeting between the NA Standing Committee and the Council for Elections of Deputies to the 11th NA, constituencies have been putting the final touches on the lists of local voters to be officially publicised before Apr. 19.

Information promotion sessions have been regularly held across the country to remind voters of the importantance of the elections, and to encourage them to fully exercise their right to mastery in building a socialist, law-governed, pure and strong nation of the people, by the people, and for the people.

Polling stations have been set up in provinces and cities throughout the country, local reports also said.

The meeting heard a report on the results of the third consultative conference presented by the Viet Nam Fatherland Front (VFF) Presidium. The VFF approved a list of 161 candidates running for the upcoming election. These candidates, including 25 females, 11 non-Party members, four religious followers, and 12 ethnic minority representatives and 74 deputies of the 10th NA, have been nominated by central agencies and organisations. Of the candiates, 85 are university degree holders and 74 are post graduates. Among them the oldest candidate is 75 years old and the youngest, 35.

The NA Standing Committee and Election Council unanimously agreed that the third central and local consultative conferences were held in a democratic and lawful way.--VNA
