VN attends conference on people smuggling and trafficking
Ha Noi, Feb. 28 (VNA) -- A Vietnamese delegation, led by Permanent Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Dinh Bin, attended the Regional Ministerial Conference on People Smuggling, Trafficking in Persons, and Related Transnational Crimes held in Bali, Indonesia from Feb. 26-28.
Taking the floor at the conference, Bin stressed that an important cause of the illegal immigration is the ill intentions of some outside forces who intentionally cause waves of people to illegally cross borders and then use the matter as a means of interfering with the internal affairs of other countries.
The Vietnamese delegation also shared the experiences of its effective cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other countries in implementing the Comprehensive Plan of Action (1989-1997) to bring back more than 100,000 illegal migrants from camps in Hong Kong and Southeast Asian countries and help them re-integrate into their communities. The international community has praised that effective cooperation, describing it as an example of international cooperation in solving the problem of illegal immigration.
The Vietnamese delegation also met with delegates of Indonesia and Australia, who co-chaired the conference, and other delegations. On this occasion, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and UNHCR delegations met and agreed to soon hold their tripartite meeting in Ha Noi to discuss measures to enhance cooperation and fulfil their January 21, 2002 tripartite agreement on repatriation of the ethnic minority people in Viet Nam's Central Highlands who had illegally crossed the border to Cambodia.--VNA
