FM Spokewoman on CPC law to try the Khmer Rouge

ANSWERS BY MOFA'S SPOKESWOMAN PHAN THUY THANH TO FOREIGN CORRESPONDENTS ON 16 AUGUST 2001

Lao Dong: What is Viet Nam's reaction Cambodia's adoption of a law to try the Khmer Rouge?

AFP: Is Vietnam willing to hand over to Cambodia the archives relating to the Khmer Rouge including information on some Khmer Rouge leaders, who defected from Khmer Rouge and are now holding positions in the Cambodian government?

Answer:

We welcome Cambodia's adoption of a law to try the Khmer Rouge and hope that this new progress will make positive contributions to Cambodia's national reconciliation and construction as well as to peace in the region and the world.

Under their rule, the Khmer Rouge not only committed extremely barbaric crimes against the Cambodian people but also waged a brutal border war against Vietnam. Their crimes must be judged and strongly condemned.

Vietnam is of the view that the judgement of the Khmer Rouge is up to the Cambodian people to decide. Vietnam respects decisions made by the Cambodian people.

We believe that the Cambodian people are wise enough to make correct decisions on this matter.
