Vietnamese students win prizes at Math Olympiad in Washington


Washington, July 15 (VNA) -- All of the six Vietnamese students competing at the 42nd International Maths Olympiad held in the United States won prizes including one gold and four silver medals and one consolation prize.

The gold medalist was Vu Ngoc Minh, an 11th grader from the Ha Noi Teachers Training College's IT Maths School. The silver medalists were Le Dinh Hung, a 12th grader from the Lam Son High School in central Thanh Hoa province; Nguyen Anh Quan, a 12th grader from the Tran Phu High School in northern Hai Phong port city; Tran Khanh Toan, an 11th grader from the Ha Noi Teachers Training College's IT Maths School; and Le Anh Vinh, a 12th grader from the Ha Noi National University's Natural Sciences School. Nguyen Hoang Dung, a 12th grader from the Ha Noi Amsterdam High School received the consolation prize.

The event attracted 500 contestants from 83 countries and territories worldwide.

Last year, all six Vietnamese students competing in the 41st International Maths Olympiad in the Republic of Korea won medals, including three golds, two silvers and one bronze. The Vietnamese team shared fifth place with Bulgaria.

In 1999, Viet Nam won three golds and three silvers, ranking third after Russia and China in such event.--VNA
