Party leader urged HCM city to serve as springboard

Ha Noi, May 15 (VNA) -- General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam Nong Duc Manh has urged Ho Chi Minh City to better tap its diverse resources for national development.

In the third day of his visit to Viet Nam's economic hub on May 14, Mr. Manh called on the municipal authorities to restructure the management system so as to be more successful in translating the ninth national Party Congress Resolution into reality. This will serve the interests of each and every family in the city.

All this, along with its tradition of creativeness in doing business, would help turn the city named after the national independence leader into a prosperous, beautiful, and civilized city, emphasized the newly-elected Party General Secretary.

Mr. Manh visited the Phong Phu Textile Company, a State-owned enterprise (SOE) with approximately 4,000 employees. The company is considered to be a model of success in the country's shift to a market economy.

The company's profitable operation over the past 26 years, especially its growth during the renovation process despite numerous challenges, is a valuable experience for other SoEs, Mr. Manh said.

The textile giant's success is part of the city's development.

The city has always lead the nation in economic growth and tax payments, said the municipal Party Committee Secretary Nguyen Minh Triet, who is also Politburo member of the CPV Central Committee.

The Party leader was reported by Le Thanh Hai, member of the Party Central Committee, member of the municipal Party Committee's Standing Board and Vice Mayor, that the city recorded an industrial growth of 16.44 percent in the first four months of this year, a record in five years. Its tax revenue increased by 8.2 percent to VND 8,793.4 billion.--VNA
