National week on labor safety and working conditions
Ha Noi, March 7 (VNA) -- Safe working conditions for labourers will be the focus of a national week on labour safety and hygiene, fire and explosion prevention which will be held in all 61 provinces and cities from March 18-24.
The week, the third of its kind, is jointly organised by the Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs, Public Security, Public Health, and Trade Ministries, and the Viet Nam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL).
Working conditions, especially in enterprises that suffer high risk of occupational accidents and diseases, models in labour safety and fire and explosion prevention work as well as legal violation causing labour accidents will be reported.
Seminars, conferences and contests on the week's topic will also be held during the week.
In Da Nang city, products and facilities relating to labour safety and hygiene, fire and explosion prevention will be on display.
According to the Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs Ministry, more than 3,400 labour accidents occurred nationwide in 2000, injuring 3,130 people and killing 400 deaths. The highest number of accidents were recorded in Ho Chi Minh City, Ha Noi, Hai Phong, and northern Quang Ninh and Thanh Hoa provinces. Most of accidents happened at construction sites, electric repair and use, and mining.
The number of fires raised year-on-year by 150 to 1,140 cases in 2000, killing more than 60 people and causing property losses worth VND 114.4 billion.
Accidents were mainly due to labourers' violation of regulations on labour safety and hygiene or little less knowledge on labour safety and working conditions.--VNA
