Women mutual assistance helps develop household economy

Ha Noi, Feb. 25 (VNA) -- The Viet Nam Women's Union (VWU) provided almost two million women with loans totalling more than VND 2,000 billion (USD 140 million) last year, a year-on-year increase of 23 percent.

The union also promoted the "women's mutual assistance to develop the household economy" movement, credit and saving activities and the dissemination of information and transfer of scientific and technological advances in production to women while implementing the hunger eradication and poverty reduction programme.

In 2000, the number of women's credit groups increased to 161,000 from 37,000 in 1999. More than 10,000 female workers were provided with loans totalling VND 137 billion to develop the household economy by the Fund for Poor Female Workers.

The union built a system of female trainers for agriculture promotion and held training courses in livestock breeding, farming techniques and microbiological fertilizer processing for almost three million women.

It also organised almost 4,850 job-training courses for over 143,870 of its members and helped 51,000 of them get jobs after finishing their courses.

This year, the VWU will continue quickening the production emulation movement among women; broadening credit and saving activities and accelerating farming technique transfer to women to help implement the national programme for hunger eradication and poverty reducation.--VNA
