Ten fishing ports upgraded

Ha Noi, Feb. 14 (VNA) -- A project on upgrade of 10 fishing ports across the country will be completed this year, says the Ministry of Fisheries (MoF).

Of the project's total investment capital of USD 71.4 million, more than USD 35.4 million was spent on port construction and nearly USD 1.7 million, management of natural resources and environmental protection.

This is the first major project on upgrade of infrastructural facilities of the fisheries sector implemented with ODA capital. The project, which benefits 10 provinces and cities with fishing ports namely Cat Ba, Cua Hoi, Xuan Pho, Song Gianh, Thuan Phuoc, Phan Thiet, Con Dao, Ca Mau, Tac Cau and Tran De, started in 1999.

It will help increase the annual combined handling capacity of the ten ports to 320,000 tonnes of aquatic products and raise the effectiveness of off-shore fishing development.

The MoF plans to upgrade 12 other ports using domestic capital this year.--VNA
