More than 112,880 people become party members in 2000



Ha Noi, Feb. 2 (VNA) -- More than 112,880 people joined the Communist Party of Viet Nam in 2000, equal to 98.6 percent of new members in 1999.

Of the new members, 32.5 percent were female, 52.8 percent under 30 years of age, 52.6 percent members of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (HCMCYU), 12.9 percent ethnic minority people and 1.1 percent religious believers.

Farmers made up 22.8 percent of the new Party recruits while workers of all economic sectors accounted for 11.1 percent, and members of the armed forces, 19.2 percent. More than 80 percent of the new Party members have finished general or higher education.

As many as 26,831 Party organizations admitted new members last year, representing 60.7 percent of the country's Party organizations.

The qualities of new Party members have improved. Of them, the number of HCMCYU members increased by 2.6 percent, young people under 30 rose by 1.7 percent, and those who hold college, university and post-graduate degrees by 2.7 percent compared to 1999.

Party organizations focused on carrying out the Party Central Committee's major policies last year. They made great efforts in strengthening and improving the quality of their own organizations and members.

On personnel strategy, these Party organizations have paid attention to combining Party development work with personnel education and training, thus boosting Party development in all social strata and localities.--VNA
