Winter-spring rice crop begins

Ha Noi, Jan. 11(VNA) -- Farmers in northern provinces are harvesting maize, a main subsidiary food crop in the winter.

Though the cultivated acreage of maize dropped by 7 percent as compared to the previous season due to heavy rain, the yield is good.

As soon as the maize crop is finished, farmers are preparing for the next winter-spring rice crop.

Meanwhile, southern farmers have harvested autumn rice on 777,160 ha, including 319,330 ha in the Mekong delta. At the same time, as many as 1,526,280 ha in southern Viet Nam have been put under winter-spring rice crop. To the figure, the Mekong delta contributed 1,313,440 ha or 84 percent of its plan.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development required northern farmers to check up the rice seedlings and prepare for the late spring rice crops and southern farmers to complete the growing of winter-spring rice crops.--VNA
