Deputy Prime Minister stresses ecotech cooperation in APEC

Ha Noi, Nov. 16 (VNA) -- Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Manh Cam stressed the importance and role of ecotech cooperation among APEC at the 8th APEC Summit in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei.

Deputy PM Cam on Nov. 16 exchanged views with other APEC member countries' leaders on the negative impacts of the rapid development of the information technology revolution, the emergence and development of a new economy and e-commerce on traditional branches of production and business.

He said that all APEC economies in particular and the world economy in general should give more assistance to developing and underdeveloped economies, especially in the fields of human resource training, technology transfer and building new trading rules with the most favourable conditions for these countries.

Regarding trade liberalization and the upcoming talks of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Mr.Cam said that the "play rules" and new agreements on trade and international economic cooperation should ensure the just interests of developing and underdeveloped countries, especially programmes on technical assistance, human resource training, creation of conditions for these member countries' exports.

He said that those APEC developing countries who are not WTO members, including Viet Nam, should participate in the upcoming WTO talks to have their voice heard and to join the organization soon, thus contributing to building fair regulations on trade and international economic cooperation for the benefits of all members countries.

Also on the same day, Deputy PM Cam met with Russian President V. Putin, Chinese President Jiang Zemin and US President William J. Clinton.

Russian President Putin expressed his pleasure with his upcoming visit to Viet Nam early next year which aims at boosting the two countries' traditional friendship and cooperation. They compared notes on issues to be discussed at the Viet Nam-Russia Joint Commission in December.

Speaking to Deputy PM Cam, Chinese President Jiang Zemin stressed the two countries' determination to sign an agreement on the delineation of the Bac Bo (Tonkin) Gulf and talked about his recent visits to Laos and Cambodia.

Deputy PM Cam and US President William J. Clinton talked about issues relating to the latter's upcoming Viet Nam visit.

During the summit, Deputy PM Cam met with other leaders of APEC member countries.
