The fourth Buddhism training course opened in Ha Noi


Ha Noi, July 26 (VNA) -- The fourth Buddhism course was opened by the Viet Nam Buddhism Institute at its headquarters, Quan Su Pagoda, in Ha Noi this morning, July 26.

Prominent among those present at the opening ceremony was Most Venerable Thich Thanh Tu, who is Permanent Deputy Chairman of the Executive Council of the Viet Nam Buddhist Sangha and Rector of the Viet Nam Buddhism Institute.

Vietnam simplifies customs procedures


Ha Noi, July 26 (VNA) -- People arriving in or leaving Viet Nam are obliged to fill in the customs declaration form in only seven cases, according to a new decree issued by the Government on July 1st, 2002.

Those who bring along duty-free goods, foreign currency and gold in excess of the set amount, or temporarily imported professional equipment for re-export or vice versa will have to declare to the customs office upon their arrival in or departure from Viet Nam.

The third border markers between Vietnam and China


Ha Giang, July 26 (VNA) -- The border marker No. 261 on the borderline between Viet Nam and China was installed at a ceremony held at the Thanh Thuy national bordergate in Ha Giang province today, July 26.

The ceremony was attended by Deputy Foreign Minister Le Cong Phung, Director of the Foreign Ministry's Border Commission and Head of the governmental-level delegation for negotiations on the Sino-Vietnamese border.

The Chinese delegation to the ceremony was headed by He Ming-sheng, deputy head of Yunnan province's foreign affairs office.

Re-elected NA chairman's biography

Nguyen Van An was re-elected chairman of Vietnam's National Assembly (eleventh Legislature). Following is his brief biography:

Nguyen Van An was born on October 1, 1937 into a poor peasant family in My Tan commune, Nam Dinh city, capital of the same province. He was a former worker at a power plant in Hanoi.

Mr An participated in the revolutionary movement from June 1954 and joined the Communist Party of Vietnam on August 14, 1959.

President Tran Duc Luong vows to strive for national prosperity

Newly re-elected President Tran Duc Luong has vowed to work closely with the National Assembly and the government to make Vietnam's internal and external policies a success.

The Ninth National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam affirmed that building a socialist law-governed State of the people, by the people and for the people under the leadership of the Party is a basic, strategic and long-term task in the process of implementing socio-economic targets set for the 2001-2010 period.

Inflation kept at 2.9% in first half of 2002

Vietnam succeeded in keeping inflation at 2.9% in the first half of this year, the government reported at its regular meeting in Hanoi on July 21.

Meanwhile, the banking system was able to mobilise enough capital for supply to key projects and for development of production and trade.

The government attributed these achievements to its correct monetary policies and efforts to strengthen the banking sector.
