Letter to US Congressmen

Dear Representative:

I am writing to you to express serious concerns over the “Human Rights Act of 2004.” Before doing so, I would like to provide you with a summary of the achievements of the Vietnam-US relationship.

Vietnam vows to continue fight against US arbitrary shrimp taxes

The Chairman of the Vietnam Shrimp Committee has insisted the US Department of Commerce (DOC)'s determinations that Vietnamese businesses dump shrimp on the US market as baseless, saying that Vietnam will continue its fight to make the DOC reconsider and adjust its unjust taxes levied on Vietnamese shrimp.

Talking with Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper recently, Mr Nguyen Van Kich, said the US import taxes on Vietnamese shrimp are arbitrary.

Vietnamese Embassy describes DOC's shrimp ruling as unfair

Washington (VNA) - The Vietnamese Embassy in the US has affirmed that the US Department of Commerce (DOC)'s preliminary ruling that Viet Nam has dumped shrimp on the US market was not in line with the law on free and fair trade and that any import duty imposed on Vietnamese shrimp is irrational.

Responding to US media and US-based foreign news agencies, the spokesperson for the Vietnamese Embassy, Bach Ngoc Chien, emphasised that Vietnamese companies have not dumped shrimp on the US market.

Trade Minister pays working visit to US


Trade Minister Truong Dinh Tuyen paid a working visit to the United States from June 7 to 10 after attending a meeting of Asian-Pacific economic ministers.

While there, he had a series of working sessions with US Commerce Secretary Donald Evans, Trade Representative Robert Zoellick, Assistant Secretary of State Anthony Wayne, Senate Commerce Committee Chairman John McCain, House Republican Conference Chairman Deborah Pryce, the Vietnam-US Friendship Parliamentarians' Group and senior officials from the Presidential Office and Finance Department.

US Ambassador says no to "State of Degar"


Ha Noi, June 3 (VNA) - The US Government does not accept violent, secessionist and terrorist acts, and will not support the so-called "State of Degar".

US Ambassador to Viet Nam Raymond F.Burghardt assured Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung during the latter's reception in Ha Noi on Thursday.

Ambassador Burghardt was informed by the Deputy PM of Viet Nam's socio-economic development achievements in the Doi Moi (Renewal) process as well as its achievements in poverty reduction in ethnic people-inhabited areas, including the Central Highlands.

VN-US trade grows, but could improve: review


WASHINGTON — Bilateral trade between Viet Nam and the United States grew last year but still did not meet potential, after a drop in Vietnamese exports to the US in the last half of 2003.

This was a conclusion from the third session of the Joint Viet Nam-US Committee for Economic and Commercial Development, which ended in Washington on Saturday.

Reviewing the bilateral trade agreement (BTA) over 2003, the two delegations recognised that joint efforts implementing the agreement helped increase two-way trade value to US$4.6 billion from $1.05 billion in 2001.

VN, US discuss how to resolve differences



HA NOI — Viet Nam and the US should strive for greater bilateral co-operation, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan told James Kelly, the US assistant secretary of state for East Asia and Pacific affairs at a meeting in Ha Noi yesterday.

Kelly is visiting Viet Nam for the fourth political dialogue between the foreign ministries of the two countries.

VN, US legislatures push for closer ties



WASHINGTON — The relationship between the Vietnamese National Assembly and the US Congress has turned a new page, National Assembly Vice Chairman Nguyen Phuc Thanh said during his visit to Washington DC from April 22 to 30.

The Viet Nam-US relationship has seen notable progress recently in various fields such as the economy, trade and education, he said. It had also improved work on health care as well as fighting terrorism and transnational crime.

New York trade centre hopes to showcase Vietnamese business



HA NOI — The Viet Nam Trade Centre in New York opened on Tuesday in a bid to provide Vietnamese businesses with a venue to showcase their products in the US market.

The centre, which includes a showroom and offices, takes up more than 300sq.m of a building in lower Manhattan, according to the Ministry of Trade’s Trade Promotion Agency (Vietrade).

Vietrade said businesses can apply to have the centre’s staff showcase their samples, catalogues and notices.
