U.S provide aid to Vietnam's agricultural projects

Ha Noi, Sept. 4 (VNA) -- The United States will provide 25,000 tonnes of wheat worth 3.2 million USD to Viet Nam's agricultural and rural development-related projects.

Seventy percent of the aid will be for five programmes on the development of irrigation system in central Thanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan provinces; a study on excess uses of insecticide on fruits and vegetables; and the development of laws on bio-technology applications in the field; milch cow development; and clean aquaculture development.

FM Nguyen Dy Nien meets the U.S., Russian and Thai counterparts

Bandar Seri Begawan, August 1 (VNA) -- Viet Nam's Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien on Wednesday proposed that Viet Nam and the U.S. establish a joint mechanism to deal with arising problems as soon as possible.

FM Nien made the proposal while meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on the sidelines of the ninth ASEAN regional forum (ARF) meeting in the capital city of Brunei on July 31.

He stressed that the two countries should focus their efforts on bolstering economic and commercial ties on the basis of the bilateral trade agreement (BTA).

Testimony at hearing on alledged catfish dumping

Ha Noi, July 26 (VNA) -- Edmund Sim, partner in the Singapore office of White & Case, has urged the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) to stop its investigation into the so-called Viet Nam catfish dumping created by the U.S. Catfish Farmers Association (CFA).

In his testimony statement delivered at a hearing held by the ITC in Washington D.C on July 19, Edmund stressed that the catfish dumping lawsuit filed by the CFA "threatens the newly flourishing relationship between the U.S. and Viet Nam."

Vietnam welcomed renewal of Jackson-Vanik waiver


Vietnam welcomes the US House of Representatives' support for President George W Bush's decision to renew the Jackson-Vanik waiver for Vietnam as a step in the right direction, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Phan Thuy Thanh in Hanoi on July 24.

Ms Thanh was answering a question raised by a correspondent from the Vietnam Investment Review about Vietnam's reaction to the July 23 US House's vote to renew the Jackson-Vanik waiver for Vietnam.

1/ Vietnam welcomes the U.S. House of Representatives' support for the President's decision to renew the Jackson-Vanik waiver for Vietnam.

By a 338-91 vote in Washington on July 23, 2002, the US House of Representatives voted for the fifth consecutive year to waive the Jackson-Vanik amendment for Vietnam.

On the implementation of the Vietnam-US Bilateral Trade Agreement


Right after the official signing of the Vietnam-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) on July 13, 2000, Vietnam has attached importance to its implementation. Since the end of 2000, Vietnam began reviewing its current laws, comparing them with the BTA. In November 2001, Vietnam established the Steering Committee on Technical Assistance for BTA implementation to assist the Prime Minister, coordinating Vietnamese Ministries and agencies as well as between Vietnam and the US in implementing the BTA.

V. President welcomes Stockholm conference on U.S chemical war

Ha Noi, July 13 (VNA) -- Vice State President Nguyen Thi Binh has expressed her desire that the Stockholm conference will help Americans recognise the heavy consequences of the U.S. war and the U.S. government acknowledge responsibility for their actions.

Her desire was written in a letter sent to a July 26-28 conference to discuss measures to solve consequences of the U.S. military's use of toxic chemicals during the U.S. war.
