60% of urban population have access to running water

Ha Noi, Dec. 1 (VNA) -- About 60 percent of 18 million people in urban areas have access to running water with share of 60-80 litres per day, according to a seminar on safe water held in Ha Noi on Nov. 30.

The seminar entitled "Water supply and drainage in Viet Nam's urban areas" was held with assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Participants included Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem; the Ambassadors of Denmark, Finland and Belgium; representatives from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and ADB; and more than 350 domestic delegates.

The participants were told that 90 percent of more than 600 urban areas in the country have not yet installed with drainage systems, except for major cities like Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City in the south, northern port city of Hai Phong and central city of Da Nang which have sewage systems, though out of date.

They also put forth measures to be taken to improve water supply and drainage systems in the country with the aim of bringing safe water to 95 percent of urban population by 2010.

Another seminar on the control of water loss is being held in Ho Chi Minh City from Nov. 30-Dec. 1 by the Ministry of Construction and JICA.

Participants agreed that modern equipment would help minimize loss of water in the country, which is measured at 30 percent on national scale.
