Vietnam Nominated For Non-Permanent Seat in UNSC in 2008
The Foreign Ministry spokesman on October 30 applauded the decision of the group of Asian countries at the United Nations to nominate Vietnam as the sole regional candidate for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council for the 2008-2009 term.
"The decision demonstrates the recognition and high appreciation of Vietnam's contributions to and its role in the UN activities by the group of Asian nations," the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Le Dung, said while answering journalists' question about Vietnam's reaction to the decision.
Since becoming a UN member in 1977, Vietnam has always been strongly committed to principles and goals of the UN Chatter, seriously realised duties and responsibilities of a member country, and made positive contributions to activities of the world's largest organisation, the spokesman said.
"To become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in the 2008-2009 term will create conditions for Vietnam to make more active contribution to the UN's process of keeping and promoting peace and security in the world," he said.
