Viet Nam Vows Safe, Comfortable APEC Summit
Viet Nam will do its utmost this year to make the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit and the activities both comfortable and safe, said Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan.
Deputy PM Khoan spoke at a press conference yesterday in Ha Noi about the upcoming APEC meeting in Viet Nam. Khoan said the country’s hosting APEC would greatly benefit the cooperative process between APEC members, as many were top partners of Viet Nam. It would provide good opportunities to intensify friendships and expand cooperative ties with APEC member economies, said Khoan.
It was also an opportunity for Vietnamese businesses to boost their relations with the APEC business community. The meeting would help the country contribute to the development process of APEC and work towards common benefits for countries in the region, Khoan said.
However, Khoan warned that Viet Nam should be aware of unexpected events and fluctuations. In that context, the country acknowledged that it would have to work very hard as a host, said Khoan.
He said Viet Nam would make every effort to work with APEC members on orientations and appropriate measures to promote cooperation between APEC member economies effectively. This would help raise APEC’s capacity to deal with global challenges, Khoan added.

He stressed that Viet Nam also welcomed APEC member economies to present their initiatives and proposals on the implementation of liberalisation targets and investment in APEC and of the BUSAN roadmap, which was recently passed at the APEC summit meeting in South Korea.
He also welcomed input on ways to intensify cooperation in economics and technology, and ways to narrow the development gap among member economies. Information technology, epidemic research and tourism development were also important topics, he said.
The APEC meeting is slated for mid November with the participation of more than 10,000 people. —
