Painting of VN children awarded gold medals in ASEAN contest

Ha Noi, Feb. 26 (VNA) -- Four of the five gold medals awarded to Vietnamese children at the 2001 ASEAN Children's Painting Contest in Indonesia were pictures about the country's traditional culture.

While Trinh Thi Huong Quynh, 11, from central coastal Quang Tri province, painted a lovely landscape titled "Autumn Sunlight", the four remaining gold medalists all painted scenes embodying Viet Nam's traditional culture: "Cock Fighting Game" (by Vu Phuong Thao, 7, Ha Noi), "Tending Buffalo and Flying Knite" (by Nguyen Thi Ha Phuong, 9, central coastal Nghe An province), "Boat Racing" (by Nguyen Thi Nhu Quynh, 10, also Nghe An), and "Catching Fish by Small Cages" (by Nguyen Ha An, 10, also Nghe An).

In addition to five gold medals, Viet Nam won three silvers, one bronze, and nine certificates of merit out of its 105 entries.

The Indonesia contest, based on children's daily life, was one of two major painting contests for children from the ten member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) last year.

At the other contest held in Egypt, Viet Nam won two golds, one silver and two certificates of merit out of its 75 entries.

The prize winners of these contests received their awards at a ceremony in Ha Noi on Feb. 26.

Viet Nam has helped its children take part in international painting contests for many years now is an effort to discover young talent for further training. Many children from mountainous provinces such as Son La and Lai Chau or from flood-stricken provinces such as Long An have partaken in these events.--VNA
