Vietnamese students at int'l Olympiads



Ha Noi, July 18 (VNA) -- July is a month of joy and pride for Vietnamese students. This year they brought home five gold, eight silver and eight bronze medals from international Olympiads of Russian language, maths, chemistry, physics and biology.

The earliest triumph was three golds and three bronzes carried off at the sixth International Russian Language Olympiad held in Moscow from June 25-30. Tran Van Linh, a girl of the 11th class of the Ha Noi-Amsterdam High School earned the maximum official (100/100) marks. Linh also received a scholarship for study at any university in Russia.

The Ha Noi-Amsterdam High School also contributed two other gold medalists, Pham Minh Le, a 12th grader, and Ly Thuy Trang, an 11th grader. Three bronze winners were Truong Thi Phuong Thanh, Tran Thi Vo Quyen and Hoang Thu Quynh, all 12th graders from Ha Tay province's Nguyen Hue High School, the Ha Noi National University's High School for the talented, and Nam Dinh province's Le Hong Phong High School.

51 Vietnamese students sent to six International Russian Language Olympiads won medals, including 35 golds, seven silvers and nine bronzes.

Physics Olympiad competitors this year added one gold, two bronze and two consolation prizes they brought from Turkey. The only gold was carried off by 12th grader Nguyen Bao Trung from the Ha Noi National University.

The country has won three gold medals for physics since its first participation in 1981.

The fifth gold medal went to Vu Ngoc Minh, an 11th grader from the Ha Noi National University's Maths School. Five other team-mates of Minh took four silvers and a consolation prize at the Maths Olympiad in Washington from July 1-14, helping Viet Nam to stand tenth among 83 competing countries and territories.

Since 1974, Viet Nam has sent 151 students to the International Maths Olympiads, 135 of them have carried off medals, including 26 golds, 64 silvers and 45 bronzes.

For the first time, all Vietnamese students at the International Biology Olympiad in Belgium from July 8-14 won medals, including one silver and three bronzes. The silver went to Truong Liem, an 11th grader of the Le Hong Phong High School of Ho Chi Minh City.

Last year, Viet Nam won a gold and a bronze in Turkey.
The latest news has come from Bombay, India, where four Vietnamese students won two silvers, one bronze and a certificate of merit at the International Chemistry Olympiad from July 6-15.

Since 1996, when Viet Nam started sending students to the International Chemistry and Biology Olympiads, 20 of 24 competitors won one gold, 10 silvers and nine bronzes for chemistry; and half of 24 competitors won one gold, two silvers and nine bronzes for biology.

Another joy is expected to come from a delegation of four Vietnamese students at the International Information Technology Olympiad in Finland from July 14-21.

Last year, Viet Nam won one gold, two silvers and one bronze and ranked seventh among the 71 teams at the International IT Olympiad in Beijing. The medal tally for IT is six golds, 12 silvers and 18 bronzes.--VNA
