Pressing solutions to support seven keey exports items

Ha Noi, May 16 (VNA) -- Seven key export items, including rice, coffee, garments-leather footwear, fine arts and handicraft articles, aquatic produce, vegetables and fruit, and meat, are expected to be given financial support from the Government.

A proposal to this effect from the Trade Ministry has been submitted to Prime Minister Phan Van Khai for approval.

According to the proposal, the Trade Ministry will increase direct subsidies through the Export Support Fund.

It will spend between VND 150 and 200 billion (USD 10.3-13.8 million) to compensate losses caused by the falling price in the sale of more than 1 million tonnes of rice, and at the same time, permit rice businesses to pay an unrestricted commission for rice export brokers.

The Trade Ministry has asked for the Government's permission to export 60,000 tonnes of coffee in storage (first phase) by May 15, 2001.

In order to sell all 150,000 tonnes of coffee in storage, including 90,000 tonnes (in the second phase), by August 15, 2001, the Ministry will apply a floor price of VND 6,500 for one kilo of coffee.

The Government will spend VND 200-225 billion (USD 13.8-15.5 million) to subsidize coffee producers in the wake of falling coffee prices.--VNA
