Int'l organizations mobilized 62 million ODA for health service
Ha Noi, April 8 (VNA) -- Viet Nam's health service received USD 62 million each year as official development assistance, ODA, of from international and non-governmental organizations from 1997 to 2000.
The figure represents 20 percent of the State budget allocated for the service.
International and non-government organizations have mobilized a total ODA capital of USD 468.226 million, including non-refundable aid and soft loans, during the past decade.
In addition, the World Bank and the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, have provided loans worth USD 15 million each year since 1997.
ODA capital has ensured the effectiveness of many major projects including USD 130-million World Bank assistance for national healthcare and primary healthcare in 16 central provinces and USD 23 million from the United Nations World Food Programme, WFP.
More than 40 non-governmental organizations from 14 countries have implemented health assistance activities in Viet Nam.
Aid has been focused on strengthening commune-district healthcare systems, primary healthcare, care for mothers and children, family planning, expanded immunization, nutrition, malaria, tuberculosis, leprosy, iodine disorder and HIV/AIDS control and personnel training.
With this international aid, the health service now has advanced equipment for treatment, production of vaccines, thus contributing to the service's regional and international integration.
Total ODA capital for the service for 2001-2005 is expected to be more than USD 528.45 million, including USD 153.18 million from international organizations, USD 127.97 million from foreign countries, USD 25 million from NGOs, USD 150 million from soft loans, and 72.3 million from credit loans.--VNA
